Meet Allyson Shearin

Meet Allyson Shearin

CAHEC first met Allyson at the Grand Opening of Beal Street Square in Rocky Mount, NC. She openly shared her testimony of finding affordable housing for her family and beamed as she explained her journey to also pursue a higher education. It was at that moment that we knew we had to find out more about Allyson and share her story with our partners.

Allyson, like some residents, once had to make the tough decision of paying her rent or paying her college tuition. As a mother to three children, she knew she had to pick paying her rent to continue providing a home for her family. That month, she was short on her rent payment, but the apartment community cashed her money order anyway and filed for eviction. Facing this rough time, she and her boyfriend packed up their three kids and had to find a new place to live.

Fast forward to now, Allyson was able to find a new home at Beal Street Square, a beautiful community nestled in Rocky Mount, NC. “I think this is a great place to live,” Allyson explained. “It’s a great place to start when you are working on building your future.” While working and being a mom full-time, Allyson also attended Nash Community College to pursue her associate’s degree in nursing. “For me, the most rewarding part of being a nurse is putting a smile on someone’s face when they haven’t smiled all day long.”

Affordable housing not only provides shelter for hard-working families, it gives them the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams. Because Allyson’s rent is much more budget friendly than before, she was able to stay on track with her education, graduating in May and landing a job at a local hospital in the psychiatric services department. Allyson is living proof that affordable housing is helping families become successful and thriving members of the community.

While we realize CAHEC played a very small role in Allyson’s journey – it’s evident that having access to affordable housing played a major part in setting her family up to succeed. “I want to thank everyone for all of their hard work and dedication to assisting families on their journey to become successful.” Allyson noted. “I am forever grateful!”
